TNA Wrestling Adds Credibility to Their Roster by Signing Nature Boy Ric Flair
On the night of January 4, 2010, wrestling fans were once again inclined to flip the channels to watch two different wrestling shows. For the first time in many years, a Monday night war, so to speak, was being engaged again. WWE's Monday Night Raw, which is televisions longest running episodic show, was opposed by TNA Wrestling's Impact program for the first time since the inception of the company.
TNA Wrestling had hyped this particular Impact show for weeks. Their biggest accomplishment over the past seven years, in many fans eyes, has been the acquisition of the most recognizable name in pro wrestling - Hulk Hogan. Hogan made his TNA on air debut on this night, but he was not the only debut that TNA fans would encounter. With the opening match, viewers experienced the return of the charismatic enigma, Jeff Hardy. But, for long time wrestling fans; I'm talking fans of old school wrestling; there was no bigger reaction that night than the appearance of Nature Boy Ric Flair.
Just as wrestling fans consider Hulk Hogan as the biggest draw in wrestling, many will also recognize Ric Flair as the best wrestler in the history of the sport. Obviously, everyone has their own opinion for that statement. Flair, a native of Charlotte, NC, arrived at the Impact Zone that night customarily in a stretch limo and dressed to the nines. But, what was his purpose there? Flair has been a die hard supporter of the WWE for years and is an inductee into their prestigious Hall of Fame (2008). And, Flair has stated numerous times that he has no interest in working for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling. Flair's reason for arriving started to make since as he entered the dressing room of the TNA World Heavyweight Champion, AJ Styles. Ric Flair is a former 16 time world heavyweight champion; serving as the kingpin of every promotion he has worked for many times over. As Ric Flair's wrestling career is presumably over, what role would he serve for TNA? A mentor for AJ Styles would be the perfect place for him.
Ric Flair signed a contract with TNA Wrestling to work 65 dates throughout the year. TNA Wrestling plans on using Flair, not only as an on-air talent, but as an ambassador to the company (much like the role he portrayed during his final days with the WWE). TNA Wrestling feels that they can benefit from Flair in an international aspect as well. Flair's popularity oversees has not subsided and sending him to foreign countries to promote TNA would be a huge boost for the company.
The young guys that work for TNA are exceptional and extremely talented. With the likes of Styles, Samoa Joe, The Motor City Machine Guns, Desmond Wolfe and Kurt Angle, there are countless five star matches in the future. If TNA is looking to compete with the WWE on a different level, they would have had no choice but to beef up their roster with stars that the casual, watch every once in a while, wrestling fans know. Hulk Hogan may have done it for most, but Nature Boy Ric Flair will do it for the rest.
